Day Thirteen

Today is our last full day at the Ward house. We start with some mystery with one of the cars. Nope, certainly can’t tell you what that’s all about … important story point.

And actually, we have two cars to deal with today. One of the red Fury shots is a pickup, because on a previous day we once again had issues keeping it running. Our fingers are crossed … and yes, we get the shot.

But the most important shot is the family breakfast scene. We have multiple players on set to be placed around the table, five to be exact; the three Ward brothers, Dan’s wife Jenny (Kira) and Dylan’s son Mason (Charlie).

The brothers have not seen each other for years, but that doesn’t keep the sparks from flying around the table. Hey guys, can’t we have a little brotherly love here, huh? You would think that shooting a static scene with several people around a breakfast table would be simple … not!

It’s just dialogue, right? Well yeah, but there are choices about staging and camera placement and movement, if any, especially relating to the scene objectives, composition and lighting, dialogue coverage, matching eyelines and performance, getting your actors on the same page, and the overall feel and rhythm of the scene. Yes, there are even more choices, but luckily some of these can be played with and tweaked in post. Yet, you had better get most of what you want right here, right now.

We finish up the day with a couple night shots and add more mystery to what could be going on with the family, and how it all relates to their past demons. The mystery and the tension grows.

Day Fourteen

We finally move out of the Ward house and on to a more scenic environment, northwest of Austin … near Marble Falls …

Turkey Bend Recreation Area. Lots of water and lots of bluebonnets. And we need lots of both.
Our first shot is another pickup shot with the red Fury because it didn’t run that first Saturday (Day 6), remember? Luckily, we do get this shot and move on to the Dylan and Mariah one …

A simple but poignant moment, amidst the scenery of bluebonnets. I was starting to get a bit concerned about this shot, because of the short period bluebonnets bloom in the spring in Texas. We originally were going to shoot this sooner, but the schedule didn’t accommodate it. So we had to force it a bit to get out there.

And yes, now we do head back to the Ward house to finish everything out there. Some tricky visual effects shots to set up.

I am usually a bit nervous about these types of shots. You hopefully acquire (shoot) all the elements you need to make these shots work in post. And as I am not a VFX expert, I do know basically what we need to get. Plus we did have a VFX advisor tell us what we needed to do. It took some time, but I think we got it.

I believe everything published made a ton of sense.
But, what about this? suppose you added a little content?
I ain’t saying your information isn’t good, however what if you added a post title that grabbed folk’s attention? I
mean Production Journal: Days 13 & 14 | One Hand Clapping Movie is a little vanilla.
You could look at Yahoo’s home page and watch how they create post headlines
to grab people to click. You might try adding a video or a
pic or two to grab readers interested about what you’ve got to say.
In my opinion, it would make your website a little
    bit more interesting.
